Furring channels
Furring channels are light, hat-shaped steel channels, also called F-sections, fixed to a wall or ceiling to give a level surface for drywall and other finishes. They leave a gap between the finish and the structure behind it, which helps with insulation and sound, and they let you finish over walls that are uneven. That makes them common in renovation work.
Carrying channels, also called main or ceiling channels, are U-shaped steel members that hold up a suspended ceiling. Cross tees and other ceiling parts attach to them, and they spread the weight of the ceiling evenly so it does not sag.
Both are galvanized steel, so they resist rust and do not warp or twist the way wood can. They are light, easy to cut to size, and fixed with screws or clips.
