What metal studs are and where they are used
Metal studs are replacing wood in a lot of framing. EBS Global, a manufacturer of construction materials headquartered in Barrie, Ontario, supplies them to contractors, architects and builders. This article covers what metal studs are, how they compare with wood, and what we make.
What metal studs are
Metal studs are lightweight framing members, typically made of galvanized steel, used to build walls, partitions and ceilings in residential and commercial buildings. They are a stronger alternative to wood framing.
C-studs are the common choice for wall assemblies: light, but strong. Tracks pair with studs to complete the frame and allow flexibility in the layout. Hat channels are used where extra support or furring is needed. EBS Global makes studs in a range of sizes, from slim profiles for interior walls to heavy sections for load-bearing walls.
Advantages over wood framing
- Durability: metal studs do not warp or crack, and termites do not damage them. Unlike wood, they keep their shape through temperature swings and humidity.
- Fire safety: galvanized steel is non-combustible, which makes it a safer choice for fire-rated assemblies in schools, hospitals and apartment buildings.
- Accuracy: metal studs are made to exact measurements, so framing comes out straight and consistent. Wood varies because of knots and grain.
- Sustainability: metal studs are often made from recycled steel and can be recycled again at the end of their life.
What EBS Global offers
Our metal studs are made from galvanized steel for corrosion resistance. Web depths run from 3-5/8 to 12 inch, for anything from partition walls to structural framing. The full list of sizes is in the product data.
The studs come with pre-punched holes for electrical wiring, plumbing and HVAC, which saves time and labour on site. If a project needs other measurements, our team can produce custom sizes.
Where metal studs are used
Metal studs frame partition walls in offices, homes and retail spaces. They also carry suspended ceilings, including acoustic panels and lighting, while leaving access for maintenance.
In commercial buildings they form the framing behind curtain walls and cladding systems. From industrial facilities to medical centres, metal studs are used for fire-rated and seismic-resistant walls that have to meet strict safety standards.
